What CBC Facilities Should a JSS Actually Have?

What CBC Facilities Should a JSS Actually Have?

CBC on a prospectus is easy to claim. Here's what to actually check for when you visit a Junior Secondary.

What CBC Facilities Should a JSS Actually Have?

Every school markets itself as “CBC-ready” now, it’s on nearly every prospectus. The gap between schools isn’t the curriculum document; it’s whether the physical facilities behind it actually exist. Here’s a practical checklist for what to look for on a visit, not just ask about on a phone call.

Science and practical facilities

CBC’s Integrated Science and later subject-specific sciences at JSS are meant to be taught with real practical work, not just theory. Ask to see the lab, not just hear that one exists, check for working equipment, safe storage for chemicals/materials, and evidence that practicals actually happen (a logbook, prepared setups, a smell of recent use are all good signs).

Library and reading resources

CBC leans on independent research and project work more than the old system did. A functioning library with age-appropriate JSS material, not just a repurposed classroom with a shelf, matters more than it sounds like it should.

Digital literacy access

Digital Literacy is a CBC learning area in its own right. Ask specifically what device access learners actually get, a computer lab, tablets, or otherwise, rather than accepting “we cover digital literacy” as a complete answer.

Sports and creative arts space

CBC treats co-curricular activity as core, not extra. Real fields, courts, or studio space (not just a shared multipurpose hall) indicate the school is resourcing this properly rather than ticking a box.

Teacher specialisation

Perhaps the most important, least visible item: are JSS subjects taught by teachers trained and TSC-registered for that specific subject, or by the same generalist primary teachers moved up a level? Ask directly. At Acacia Ridge, every JSS subject is taught by a TSC-registered specialist, on infrastructure inherited from the campus’s former life as a full secondary school, labs, library and sports fields included. We’re happy to show you around in person.

The best way to check any of this is to see it. Book a visit and walk our labs, library, and JSS classrooms yourself, or ask us directly on WhatsApp what we can and can’t offer yet.
