Reading Week: Instilling a Love of Books
This term we celebrated National Reading Week with storytelling sessions, a book fair, and a reading challenge for all levels.
Acacia Ridge School marked National Reading Week with a full programme of literacy events that drew in every learner from Playgroup to Grade 9. The week was organised by the school library team under the theme “Every Book is a New World.”
Highlights included a whole-school silent reading hour each morning, daily storytelling sessions for Kindergarten learners led by community volunteers, and a school-wide reading challenge where students logged their minutes and earned reading badges.
The school also hosted a two-day book fair in partnership with a Nairobi-based bookshop, bringing over 500 titles to campus. More than 300 books were sold, and several families donated titles to the school library.
A class-level poetry recitation competition was held on Friday, with judges, including parents and the school chaplain, awarding prizes for expression, diction, and creativity.
“Reading is the foundation of every other skill we teach,” said Librarian Ms. Chebet. “This week reminded our learners, and their parents, that books are an adventure, not a chore. We hope to see even more families reading together at home.”
